Urban Meyer: New College Football Playoff model creates ‘panic’ for two-loss, three loss teams

The new College Football Playoff Rankings 12-team model will not be implemented until 2024; however, the future state of the model was released and analyzed by coaches, media, and fans alike.

Former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer is among those who have expressed concern about the expanded playoff format. During an appearance on Fox Sports, Meyer said the new model creates “panic” for teams with two or three losses.

In the current four-team playoff format, a two-loss team has never made the College Football Playoff, and a three-loss team has never even been ranked in the top 10 of the final CFP rankings.

But under the new 12-team model, a two-loss team could make the playoff if it has an impressive resume, and a three-loss team could make the playoff if it wins its conference championship game.

Meyer believes this will lead to more teams playing it safe and avoiding risky games that could result in a loss. He also believes it will make it more difficult for Group of Five teams to make the playoff.

“I think it’s going to create panic,” Meyer said. “You’re going to have teams playing not to lose instead of playing to win. And I think it’s going to make it harder for Group of Five teams to make the playoff.”

It remains to be seen whether Meyer’s concerns will be realized. The new playoff format will not be implemented until 2024, so there is still plenty of time for debate and discussion.

But Meyer’s comments are a reminder that the expanded playoff format will have a significant impact on the college football landscape.

Only time will tell whether the changes will be positive or negative.
