Trae Young Ruled Out for Season with Achilles Injury
Atlanta Hawks Star Point Guard to Undergo Surgery
Young suffered a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot during the Hawks' 118-113 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday night.
The injury occurred with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Young was driving to the basket when he appeared to step on Celtics forward Jayson Tatum's foot. Young immediately crumpled to the ground in pain and was helped off the court by teammates.
An MRI on Saturday confirmed the torn Achilles tendon. Young is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days and will miss the remainder of the season.
The loss of Young is a major blow to the Hawks, who are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Young is the team's leading scorer and assist leader, and his absence will be felt on both ends of the court.
The Hawks have not yet announced a timetable for Young's return, but Achilles injuries typically require a lengthy recovery period. It is possible that Young could miss the entire 2023-24 season.
Young's injury is the latest in a string of bad luck for the Hawks. The team has already lost Dejounte Murray to a torn ACL, and John Collins has been dealing with a foot injury.
Despite the injuries, the Hawks remain confident that they can make a playoff push. The team has a talented roster, and they are hoping that Young can return healthy next season.
