Texas Sanctions Tyson-Paul, But With Caveats

Hall of famer Austin gives boxing his blessing

On Tuesday, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) gave its blessing to the June 6th boxing exhibition between Mike Tyson and Logan Paul. The approval, however, was not without caveats. Unlike their April exhibition in Miami, which was sanctioned by the Florida State Boxing Commission, the Austin bout will have three distinct differences.

1. Larger Gloves

The TDLR requires the use of 12-ounce gloves. Tyson and Paul used 10-ounce gloves for their Miami exhibition. In theory, the larger gloves will reduce the risk of a knockout.

2. No Headgear

Tyson and Paul fought in headgear in Miami. This time, they will not. Again, the change is based on safety. The TDLR evidently believes the removal of headgear will minimize the risk of a serious concussion.

3. Eight Rounds Instead of Six

The Miami exhibition was scheduled for six, two-minute rounds. The Austin exhibition will run for eight, two-minute rounds. The increased number of rounds and the shorter duration of each round reduces the likelihood of a knockout. The TDLR also said the eight rounds include one-minute rest periods.
