P.J. Washington, Dallas Mavericks Agree to Two-Year Deal
Mavs Acquire Coveted Forward in Trade with Hornets
Washington Provides Length, Athleticism to Dallas' Roster
The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with free agent forward P.J. Washington, as first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic. Washington, a former first-round pick of the Charlotte Hornets, will join a young and talented Mavericks team looking to make a playoff push in the upcoming season.
Washington, 24, is a versatile forward who can play both power forward and center. He is known for his length, athleticism, and defensive prowess. In the 2022-23 season with the Hornets, Washington averaged 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.
The addition of Washington gives the Mavericks a much-needed boost in the frontcourt. He will provide size, rebounding, and defense alongside All-Star Luka Doncic and Christian Wood. Washington's ability to stretch the floor with his shooting will also create more space for Doncic to operate.
The Mavericks acquired Washington in a trade with the Hornets that sent Dwight Powell and a second-round pick to Charlotte. The trade was a salary-dump move for the Hornets, who are looking to shed salary to create cap space for other moves.
Washington is expected to play a key role for the Mavericks in the upcoming season. He will be counted on to provide defense, rebounding, and floor spacing alongside Doncic and Wood. If he can live up to expectations, the Mavericks could be a legitimate contender in the Western Conference.
