Okmok Caldera M1.8 Earthquake Update

Significant seismic activity reported in the Aleutian Islands

Initial reports indicate a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of M1.8

According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of M1.8 occurred at 10:36 AM AKDT on July 19, 2023, in the Aleutian Islands. The epicenter was located approximately 90 miles west-southwest of Cold Bay, Alaska, and 75 miles northeast of False Pass, Alaska.

The earthquake was relatively shallow, with a depth of about 25 miles. This depth, combined with the moderate magnitude, suggests that the earthquake was likely caused by movement along a fault within the Earth's crust.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake. However, residents in the area are advised to be prepared for aftershocks, which are common following earthquakes.

Scientists at the Alaska Earthquake Center are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.

If you felt the earthquake, please report it to the Alaska Earthquake Center at https://earthquake.alaska.edu/reporting.
