GOP senators leave the door open for Cabinet picks like RFK Jr., Musk
Republican senators on Sunday left the door open to President-elect Donald Trump appointing non-traditional Cabinet picks, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk, but said they would need to be properly vetted.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said on "Fox News Sunday" that he would be "open" to considering Kennedy, an environmental activist and son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, for a Cabinet position.
“I think he's a very interesting guy," McCain said. "I don't know him well, but I've met him a couple of times. He's very bright, he's very articulate, and he's certainly qualified for a Cabinet position."
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said on "CBS's Face the Nation" that he would be "fine" with Trump appointing Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, to a Cabinet position.
"I think he's a great guy," Graham said. "He's a very successful businessman. He's a visionary. And I think he would bring a lot of energy and excitement to the Cabinet."
However, both McCain and Graham said that any Cabinet picks would need to be properly vetted.
"I think we need to vet them carefully," McCain said. "We need to make sure they're qualified. We need to make sure they're not going to embarrass the president or the country."
