Fourth-Quarter Shooting Woes Derail ISU Women in Road Loss to San Diego State
ISU's Fourth-Quarter Struggles
ISU's women's basketball team suffered a disappointing road loss to San Diego State on Saturday, as their fourth-quarter shooting struggles proved costly.
The Redbirds led by eight points heading into the final period but were outscored 21-10 in the fourth quarter, shooting just 20% from the field (4-of-20).
ISU star guard Maya Wong, who had led the team with 19 points through three quarters, was limited to just two points in the fourth quarter, missing all five of her field goal attempts.
Defensive Lapses and Missed Opportunities
Defensive Lapses
The Redbirds' defense also struggled in the fourth quarter, allowing San Diego State to shoot 50% from the field (9-of-18) and hit 3-of-7 three-pointers.
SDSU's leading scorer, Mallory Adams, scored eight of her team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, exploiting ISU's defensive breakdowns in the paint.
Missed Opportunities
ISU had several chances to extend their lead or cut into San Diego State's lead in the fourth quarter but missed key free throws and layups.
The Redbirds finished the game shooting just 57.1% from the free throw line (8-of-14) and missed several point-blank shots that could have changed the outcome of the game.
Disappointing End to Road Trip
The loss to San Diego State marked the end of a disappointing two-game road trip for ISU, who also lost to Fresno State on Thursday night.
The Redbirds are now 1-3 on the season and will have a chance to regroup at home next week before facing No. 10 Iowa on December 17th.
