Cooper Flagg, who graduated from Highland High School in 2014, was recently named the school's new head football coach. Flagg brings back the heart and soul to Pirates football.
Flagg was a standout player for the Pirates, leading the team to a state championship in 2013. He was also a two-time All-State selection. After graduating from high school, Flagg went on to play college football at the University of Northern Colorado.
After graduating from college, Flagg played a season semi-professionally in Arizona before returning home. He was then offered the head coaching position at Highland High School, and he jumped at the opportunity.
"I'm excited to be back home and coaching at my alma mater," Flagg said. "I want to bring back the winning tradition to Pirates football."
Flagg has a strong track record of success as a coach. He was the defensive coordinator at Highland High School for two seasons before taking over as head coach. During his time as defensive coordinator, the Pirates allowed just 14 points per game.
Flagg runs a defense-heavy team. He referred to his team as "scrappy." He also is adding new dynamics to practice that will increase the team's grit.
Flagg is excited about the opportunity to lead the Pirates back to the playoffs. He knows it will be a challenge, but he is confident that his team has what it takes to be successful.
"We have a lot of talent on this team," Flagg said. "I'm confident that we can make a run at the state championship."
The Pirates will open their season on Aug. 31 at home against the Greeley West Spartans.
