Braves reportedly planning to exercise Marcell Ozuna's contract option
Ozuna set to return to Atlanta in 2023
Braves expected to make decision by November 10th
The Atlanta Braves are reportedly planning to exercise their $17 million contract option for outfielder Marcell Ozuna for the 2023 season, according to a report from The Athletic.
Ozuna, 31, is coming off a down year in which he batted just .226 with 23 home runs and 80 RBIs in 151 games. However, he is still considered a valuable asset due to his power and his ability to play both corner outfield positions.
The Braves have until November 10th to make a decision on Ozuna's option. If they decline the option, he will become a free agent.
Ozuna was acquired by the Braves in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2020. He helped the team win the World Series that year, batting .338 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in the postseason.
However, Ozuna's production has declined since then. He batted just .263 with 18 home runs and 55 RBIs in 2021, and his numbers dropped even further in 2022.
Despite his recent struggles, Ozuna is still a valuable player due to his power and his ability to play both corner outfield positions. He is also a good clubhouse presence and is well-respected by his teammates.
If the Braves exercise Ozuna's option, he will be under contract for one more year. He will be eligible for free agency again after the 2023 season.
